What is a Just Transition?

A ‘Just Transition’ is an opportunity to encapsulate social justice and climate justice for people, places, and communities and redress inequalities and improve life outcomes.

In North East Scotland this is more than an energy transition. It is led by empowered communities whose voices, wishes, concerns, and ambitions are heard, supported, and acted upon.

What local communities have taught us

Each community is unique, yet common themes and priorities are emerging across many we work with. By collaborating with the JTCP and our network, communities can drive a Just Transition—improving neighbourhoods, wellbeing, and local prosperity, making connections, and taking climate action to protect our planet.

Resources & Toolkits

We’re dedicated to uncovering what it takes to enable communities to drive a truly “Just” transition in Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, and Moray. We know people care deeply about their communities, yet may not know how to get involved. But here’s the good news: you’re not alone. We’re here to help. Whether you’re an individual passionate about taking action or part of a group ready to make a difference, we’ve got resources, toolkits, and guidance you need to take your first—or next—steps.

Working together

Where it all began

In November 2022, NESCAN Hub received a grant from the Scottish Government to launch an ambitious pilot programme: a series of community climate assemblies and engagement events across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, and Moray. This initiative marked the birth of the Just Transition Communities Project (JTCP), designed to empower communities to achieve a fair and inclusive Just Transition for all.

The JTCP

Building belief and strength in community voice and action. Sharing expertise, power, and creative solutions.

For the past three years, the team behind the Just Transition Communities Project (JTCP), established and funded by the Scottish Government, has been meeting with, listening to, and working alongside communities from across Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire, and Moray.

JTCP Partners

Led by NESCAN Hub, the JTCP brought together a diverse coalition of strategic partners, including tsiMoray, the University of Aberdeen’s Just Transition Lab (UoA JTL), Aberdeen for a Fairer World (AFW/MDEC), Open Source, Go Deep Scotland, and the Community Chartered Network (CCN). In year 4, three key partners (shown below) continue and expand on the work supporting communities to drive a Just Transition across our region.
